Menopause is a natural transition in a woman’s life defined by a lack of menstruation for 12 months. The average age women enter menopause is 51, however, for some women, it may be induced prematurely through medical interventions. In either case, menopause does not have to be a difficult, uncomfortable process.
During menopause, approximately 85% of women report experiencing symptoms of some sort. Common concerns include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, poor memory, difficulty sleeping, and joint pain. Women may also experience anxiety, depression, urinary incontinence, recurrent UTI’s, and a decrease in libido. These and other symptoms can be very disruptive to a woman’s life and have a significant impact on overall wellbeing.
The medical approach to dealing with unpleasant symptoms during menopause is hormone replacement
therapy (HRT). Although HRT can be quite effective for some women, acupuncture is a more natural and
affordable way to ease these symptoms and improve overall vitality. Often patients come to acupuncture for relief because they are concerned about the potential long-term effects of HRT or are experiencing side effects from these medications. Acupuncture and herbs can provide relief from the various symptoms of menopause and ensure women feel vibrant during this phase of life.
Acupuncture alleviates menopausal symptoms by stimulating the nervous system. As a result, the nervous system is able to regulate the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. When hormones and neurotransmitters are produced in the right amounts, women feel healthy physically and mentally. Herbs such as wild yam, black cohosh, and dang gui also effectively balance hormones to reduce the symptoms of menopause. Acupuncturists blend ingredients like these with other herbs to create safe and effective herbal medicines that relieve the symptoms of menopause by restoring balance to the body. Herbs can be used on their own but the best results come from using herbs and acupuncture together.
As always, a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress are important to ensuring a smooth transition during menopause. If you are finding these things are not enough or difficult to achieve on your own, we are here to help with acupuncture and herbs!
