Acupuncture is an ancient healing system that has been used successfully for over 2000 years. Small, filiform (threadlike) needles are inserted into the different acupuncture points along the body. Recent studies show that stimulation of the points improves blood flow to the insertion area, modulates the hormones, heal tissue, and bring the body back to a state of homeostasis or balance.

Acupuncture performed by a licensed acupuncturist is very safe and has little or no side effects.

That depends on where your acupuncturist went to school and what the state requirements are. Generally, acupuncturists must complete a 3-4 years master's program to earn their license to practice. In states like California, the conditions are higher and also require education in Chinese herbal medicine.

Acupuncture needles are very thin and small, not much bigger than a hair width. The most you should feel is a pinch–and even that is rare. Most people feel very relaxed during a treatment and often fall asleep.

According to modern research, acupuncture brings the body back to a state of homeostasis or balance. Acupuncture increases vasodilation (opening of the blood vessels) to promote healing in the tissues. It also modulates the neuroendocrine system (hormones and endorphins) and creates new tissue, which is essential in recovery and de-swells the nervous system to reduce pain and inflammation.

Chinese Medicine works cumulatively, like chiropractic care, physical therapy, counseling, or even most medications work. Your treatment plan will depend on how long you have had your condition. 

If you’ve had your condition for less than six months, it’s considered acute and will take less time to reverse. If it’s been longer than six months, it will take longer to change. 

Acute conditions typically take about 6-10 treatments. Chronic conditions can take longer, anywhere from 10-40 treatments. But we will know, however, after the first 4-6 treatments if acupuncture will work for you. 

Once your treatment plan is complete, you may need maintenance sessions about every 4-6 weeks so that the issues don’t return.
